In my last post, I introduced the idea of my 40-over-40 Portrait Experience, but now that I’m halfway through, I wanted to give more details about the process and background of it.

I opened a new studio location last April in downtown, San Diego. Previously, I was renting various studios around town but then I decided to take that leap and lease my own. Initially, I was photographing boudoir sessions. Bringing out the confidence and beauty in the women who came into my studio was the best feeling. Eventually, it evolved into something more powerful and rewarding than I had even anticipated.

Visual Art Storytelling

I started a “40-over-40” Portrait Experience – on a quest to photograph 40 women in their 40s, 50s, 60, 70s and beyond. The experience has been wildly fulfilling, for each of my clients as well as myself. Each woman who participates has such a unique and inspiring story. I have really loved photographing each one, to share their story. It’s been visual art storytelling, and every session has been uniquely theirs.

The Process

I set up a 10–15-minute phone consultation with every woman interested in the photo session. I explain all the details of the process and answer any questions she may have. Each photo session includes professional hair and makeup. I work with a few different hair and makeup artists who style all different kinds of hair – different lengths and textures – and apply makeup that is customized to each woman’s skin tone and personal preferences.

After hair and makeup, we review wardrobe and styling. Some women like to bring in their own items and some just borrow everything from my client closet. Once we have a plan in place, I start the photo session. I guide you through everything – the posing, the movements, where to place your head, hands, arms, legs, etc. You’re never left to guess what to do. And then eventually you become so comfortable, that things naturally fall into place on their own. The photo session with me lasts 60-90 minutes.

After the photo session, we schedule a Reveal session where I show you the edited images. You’ll select all your favorites. Your top favorite will be yours to keep – in both the high-resolution edited digital image as well as an 8”x10” mat with a 5”x7” fine art archival-quality print. If you’d like to get more, I have additional options to purchase a la carte or to buy in a collection with beautiful heirloom products.

Why you should book this Portrait Experience

Above all though, the experience is what so many women have really loved. To feel pampered and taken care of and to feel confident and beautiful – it’s truly an unforgettable experience that the images will leave a lasting memory of. Most women don’t get to experience seeing their beauty in this way. I love being able to show women a side of them they’re not used to ever seeing, and certainly not in their day-to-day living.

I have been fortunate enough also to be able to deliver these heirloom products in person after they’ve been handcrafted and created in Italy. They have brought tears to these women’s eyes. To see themselves in these gorgeous works of art – it’s a rewarding and overwhelming feeling. This has been such a positive experience for myself as well and it’s why I want to keep serving women in this way.
